Day 3: Sightseeing tour of Florence
Included meal: Breakfast
Florence, the Tuscan capital, is home to the world’s greatest examples of Renaissance art and architecture. After driving in from Montecatini Terme, meet up with a local guide and get to know La Bella—one of many adoring nicknames given to the city.
- Head to Florence’s UNESCO-listed historic center and view its exquisite, 15th-century cathedral. Known simply as the Duomo—Italian for “cathedral”—the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the world’s third-largest church.
- Pass Giotto’s Campanile, or bell tower, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that rises nearly 280 feet above the city and features the same red, white, and green marble found on the Duomo’s facade.
- Walk across the medieval Ponte Vecchio, an iconic bridge that spans the Arno River and has been lined with shops since the 13th century.
- Explore the renowned Basilica of Santa Croce. Along with its stunning collection of frescoes, this 13th-century Franciscan church is known for its ornate tombs—serving as the final resting place of Michelangelo, Galileo, and other luminaries.
Tour complete, either return to your hotel or stay behind and explore Florence at your leisure. Maybe scope out a restaurant and order a bowl of ribollita, a hearty vegetable soup bulked up with chunks of bread. And don’t be afraid to linger: Dopopranzo—the concept of relaxing at your table with post-meal conversation—is welcome.
Day 4: Free day in the Tuscany Region
Included meal: Breakfast
Beyond Florence, other quintessentially Tuscan destinations (think: Renaissance cathedrals, UNESCO-protected piazzas, and more) dot the Italian countryside. To check another off your travel list, strike out into those famous hills and visit the medieval city of Siena on today’s excursion. Alternatively, hang back in Montecatini and go for a soak. Generations of locals have relaxed in the town’s mineral waters; with a number of thermal baths to choose from, you can do the same.

Day 5: Sightseeing tour of Cinque Terre
Included meal: Breakfast
Sometimes, even the most glowing reviews can’t capture the overwhelming beauty of a place. And today, you’ll encounter a prime example: Cinque Terre. Head to the Ligurian port city of La Spezia and set off on a full-day trip through this clifftop cluster of villages.
Perched along a jagged six-mile strip of coastline, Cinque Terre’s arresting natural beauty prompted Italy to designate the entire area a national park. You’ll enjoy short walks through some of its settlements, drinking in the sight of picture-perfect harbors, pastel-painted houses, and horizon-lapping waters as you go. Do keep in mind that the day involves a bit more walking than usual—including a 30-minute stroll each way between the bus drop-off point and the train station in La Spezia—so comfortable shoes and a sense of adventure are a must. After savoring the region’s unique atmosphere, traditions, and cuisine, you’ll travel along dramatic shores and vineyard-covered slopes back to La Spezia, where you’ll board your bus and transfer back to your hotel.
Please note: Depending on the weather and crowds, travel between La Spezia and Cinque Terre may either be by boat or train. Additionally, the specific villages you visit may vary. Regardless, you should feel comfortable walking 4-5 miles uninterrupted.
Amalfi Coast: 3 nights
Day 6: Train to Naples & sightseeing tour of Pompeii
Included meal: Breakfast
Transfer back to Florence and board a high-speed train bound for the seaside city of Naples. Once you pull into the station, hop off your railcar and onto your bus to make the quick journey to Pompeii—an ancient city, frozen in time, where excavated ruins unveil the daily routines and defining tragedy of a bygone civilization. Tour its well-preserved streets, houses, and public buildings to glimpse life in the first-century Roman Empire and learn how the settlement was buried by a cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
After a spot of sightseeing, return to your bus and settle in for the final leg of your journey. Before long, you’ll arrive in Vietri sul Mare—your gateway to the world-famous Amalfi Coast. Check into your hotel, then either settle in for the evening or stretch your legs and explore the area.
Please note: Porterage isn’t included for the train ride to Naples. You should feel comfortable lifting and carrying all luggage over steps, onto platforms, and into storage. Please consult our FAQs for the train luggage allowance.
Day 7: Walking tour of Amalfi, Minori visit & coastal ferry ride
Included meals: Breakfast, Tasting
A vacation destination since ancient Roman times, the Amalfi Coast offers up some of Italy’s most iconic (and beautiful) scenery. From terraced cliffs to candy-colored villas, travel by land and sea to survey this sensational area of southern Italy.
- Begin by boarding a ferry in Sorrento—the town that lends the famous peninsula its name—and sailing to Amafli. Framed by steep cliffs emerging from azure waters, this coastal settlement seems plucked from a postcard.
- After docking, make your way to the Amalfi Cathedral. Dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew, this ninth-century church houses some of his revered relics. It’s an architectural masterpiece, too, flaunting a singular combination of Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, and other styles.
- Enjoy some free time in Amalfi (beach, anyone?) before taking to the water once again and cruising to Minori—a UNESCO-listed village dubbed the Eden of the Amalfi Coast for its rich culinary heritage.
- Stop at Pasticceria Sal De Riso, a pastry shop, to sample delizia al limone. Made by coating impossibly light sponge cake with a tangy lemon custard, these delightful desserts are synonymous with the Amalfi Coast.
End your day back on the boat and head along the coast to Sorrento, where you’ll bus back to your hotel in Vietri sul Mare.
Please note: The boat ride is weather-dependent and runs from April through October. If the boat’s unavailable, this experience may either take place on day 8 or be replaced with a sightseeing tour of Salerno.
Day 8: Free day on the Amalfi Coast & farewell dinner
Included meals: Breakfast, Farewell dinner
To end your Amalfi retreat on a high note, add our optional excursion to the ancient Greek city of Paestum for a helping of history paired with delightful Campanian wines. Prefer to spend the day on your own? Go for a hike on the Path of the Gods, Valle dei Mulini, or another of the area’s amazing trails—just be sure to coordinate transit to and from the trailhead. For a different kind of relaxation, grab a seat outside a local cafe and sink into the pace of daily life.
Tonight, celebrate your trip with your group at a farewell dinner, served with your choice of beer or wine.

Southern Italy’s largest city, Naples combines old-world charm and bayside beauty in a single, lovely locale. Ride your bus to the Campanian capital; once you arrive, get acquainted with some of its best sights and bites on a food-themed walking tour.
- Walk through the Piazza del Gesu Nuovo—anchored by a towering statue of the Virgin Mary—and view the eponymous church looming over the square.
- Enter the Basilica of Santa Chiara. Part of an eponymous monastery, this church was built in the 14th century, partially destroyed during World War II, and restored in 1953. As you walk its cloister, have your camera ready: Floral majolica tiles adorn this photogenic sanctuary.
- Sample Neapolitan specialties and sip some of the local espresso. In a country idolized for its coffee, the shots pulled in Naples stand out for their quality.
What makes Neapolitan pizza so tasty? Uncover the simple secret behind this beloved dish on this evening’s optional excursion.
